Utilizing Renovations to Give Your Home a Luxurious Feel

While many of us dream of waking up in the morning and having coffee in a spotless, gourmet kitchen that overlooks the infinity-edge pool in the backyard of our 10,000 square-foot Hollywood Hills home, most of us live in everyday homes. Just because you don’t live in a mansion doesn’t mean that you can’t add a little luxury, however. Here are a few renovation ideas that can give your home a luxurious feel.

4 Ways to Utilize Renovations to Give Your Home a Luxurious Feel

1. Consider an Open Floor Plan

When you think of high-end homes, you think large, open, expansive spaces that allow lots of flow and light. It’s likely that you can achieve this in your home by taking down a wall or two and creating an open floor plan.

In most homes, the ideal place to do this is between the living room and kitchen. Gone are the days when cooking activities were to be hidden away behind closed doors. With today’s busy schedules, it’s easier for parents to be able to cook and prep meals while talking to their kids and helping them with their homework. An open kitchen-living room plan is also ideal for entertaining, as it allows hosts to have constant interaction with their guests. It also provides a place to set up drinks and snacks, leaving the living area for lounging and chatting.

2. Turn Your Bathroom into a Home Spa

Just because you can’t afford to employ a full-time massage therapist to hang at your house and pamper you doesn’t mean you can’t give your home a luxurious feel by transforming your bathroom into a home spa. Consider getting rid of your traditional bathtub/shower setup and using that space for a beautiful steam shower. Install massaging body jets and you have a steam room/massage therapist in one!

You can also replace the standard tile in your bathroom with updated flooring that looks more natural. While some homeowners opt for natural stone, you can also find much more affordable tile that resembles natural stone at a fraction of the cost. Choose soothing, muted tones for your walls to create a bathroom you can go to refresh, relax, and rejuvenate.

3. Spring for a Few Fun Amenities

You don’t have to break the bank to give your home a luxurious feel while renovating it. Choose one fun item that’s a “want,” rather than a “need.” You might install a wine chiller in the kitchen if you enjoy imbibing beverages. Electric blackout drapes in the master bedroom truly add a high-end touch. A hip, wall-mounted electric fireplace in the living room installed on a wall accented with tile or natural stone can totally transform your living space from meh to mesmerizing. Consider finishing out your basement and adding a big-screen TV to turn it into a beautiful home theater room.

4. Create a Guest Suite

Nothing spells luxury like giving your guests their own suite when they come to visit. Depending on the layout of your home and your budget, this could range from turning an existing extra room into a guest room/guest bath combination all the way to building a home addition that includes a guest living area and small kitchen in addition to a bedroom and bathroom. Either way, you’ll thank yourself when you no longer have to give up your bedroom to Nana when she comes to visit for Christmas this year.

Even if you aren’t one of the Hollywood elite, that doesn’t mean you can’t add some incredibly high-end features to your home. You may never have a full-sized basketball court in your backyard or an Olympic-sized swimming pool in your basement, but that’s no reason you can’t live like a king. When you think beyond utility and start to get creative, it’s easy to give your home a luxurious feel.
